Alternative Medicine, Home Remedies for Miscarriage Treatment
Miscarriage is one of the worst things that a couple has to face. The loss of the anticipated bundle of joy is something that cannot be described in mere words. But in many cases, miscarriage occurs due to ignorance or carelessness on part of the woman. When a woman becomes pregnant, she must realize that she is no longer alone; she is carrying another life within her womb. So she must take adequate precautions to protect and nourish the baby inside her womb.
There are many guidelines in Ayurveda on how a woman must protect her pregnancy. Precautions begin right from the time when the fertilization between the sperm and the egg take place. Any deficiency in either of these gametes during fertilization can lead to a miscarriage later. Even when the pregnancy occurs, the woman must take a great deal of precaution during the first trimester, as this is when the fetus is developing. Women who have had miscarriages earlier must take extreme precaution when dealing with a new pregnancy.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Miscarriage
1. Asafetida (Ferula fetida)
Asafetida is the common solution to most women’s problems. It must be taken during the pregnancy months to prevent the risk of a miscarriage.
2. Asparagus (Asparagus racemosus)
The asparagus is known as the women’s ashwagandha for no mean reason. It is effective in treating most problems related to the female reproductive system. It is popularly known as shatavari in India. This herb can treat infertility and threatened miscarriages, among other benefits.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Miscarriage
During pregnancy, a woman must be very particular about what she eats. Precautions must be taken in the first trimester. The following are points must be observed:-
1. All foods that can aggravate the pitta must be avoided. This will lead to an improper digestive fire, leading to constipation. Constipation must be prevented during pregnancy at all costs.
2. Foods that increase the heat of the body must be avoided. Sharks are the leading foods in this category. Other sea foods like prawns, lobsters, crabs, shellfish, etc. must also be avoided.
3. Papaya is extremely harmful for the growing fetus. It must be avoided at all costs. Pineapple is another food to be avoided.
4. Cooling fruits such as watermelons, oranges, apples, etc. are good. But it must be remembered not to have any one type of food in excess during a pregnancy.
5. Eating outside must be avoided as far as possible. When going out for a while, the woman must carry her own homemade lunchbox, or must subsist on ‘safe’ foods such as biscuits. Even water must be boiled and then consumed.
6. It is not advisable to experiment with tastes when a woman is pregnant, especially in the first three months. It is better to consume foods that the stomach is familiar with.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Miscarriage
Among the many Ayurvedic remedies for preventing miscarriage, one of the most important is the Triphala choorna. This is a mixture of three important herbs – amalaki (which balances pitta dosha), bibhitaki (which balances kapha dosha) and haritaki (which balances kapha dosha). Hence the Triphala is given to correct all the doshic imbalances in the body of the woman.
(4) Home Remedies for Miscarriage
1. Take some amount of asafetida and dissolve it in water. This must be consumed once every day during the months of pregnancy. If a woman has a miscarriage before, then this asafetida water must be certainly given in that particular month. This is considered to be a very effective precaution against miscarriage.
2. Have a spoonful of fresh juice of vitamin C mixed with honey every morning.
3. In order to lower the heat in the groin area, a towel must be dipped in cold water and compressed on the area. This must be done once a day.
4. Prepare a decoction of black gram in water. This will reduce the fear of a miscarriage.
There some important tips and pointers to be kept in mind. These are:-
a. No antibiotics must be taken during the pregnancy at all. This includes aspirin. Antibiotics can increase the heat of the body, which could be very harmful to the developing fetus. If there is some problem like headache, cold or fever, then natural remedies must be adopted instead of using antibiotics.
b. Tobacco is absolutely dangerous during a pregnancy. Not only must the expecting mother avoid smoking, she should also not go in the vicinity of other people who are smoking. Passive smoking contains toxins that are more harmful to the fetus than direct smoking.
c. Stressful exercises must be avoided. Especially activities that strain the groin area, such as lifting heavy weights, must be avoided. This could physically damage the fetus.
d. Some women are tempted to take antibiotics in order to stop the vomiting and the giddiness in the first trimester. This should not be done at all. If any antibiotics need to be taken, then they must be done in consultation with the gynecologist. Even there, the gynecologist may suggest alternative therapies.

Combining Acupuncture & IVF Treatment for better results
There are many “alternative” treatments addressing fertility issues, which lead to the question “Does the combined treatments of acupuncture and IVF achieve more successful results?”
Acupuncture through its history has been attributed in helping a variety of ailments, all the while having an overall healing effect on the body. Acupuncture is increasingly being used to help with infertility. Women wishing to fall pregnant but struggling to conceive are turning to acupuncture, alongside IVF or donor-egg transfer.
The truth is that acupuncture although not generally used as a primary therapy for most fertility problems, is fast becoming a valuable support therapy for infertility.
Acupuncture can also treat a number of fertility disorders. Recent studies show that acupuncture has a positive effect on the female reproduction system by increasing and regulating blood supply to both ovaries and uterus, and promoting regular ovulation.
Combined with herbs acupuncture can treat elevated follicle stimulating hormones, repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained infertility, luteal phase defect, and male factor including men affected with sperm-DNA-fragmentation, among others.
Studies conducted regarding the benefits of acupuncture combined with infertility treatments have shown mixed results. It can be shown that acupuncture and infertility treatments together are substantially better than IVF treatments without acupuncture. The advantages that have been observed and the fact that acupuncture is both harmless and readily available, is regularly offered as an additional treatment to conventional infertility treatments.
One such study, (by Dr Eric Manheimer of the University of Maryland School of Medicine) indicated that the use of acupuncture may increase the success of IVF therapy by as much as 65%, with additional studies in Europe and the US offering signs that acupuncture treatments given on the day of implantation in IVF therapy can improve the success of implantation. On the other hand other studies have found no clear correlation between successful implantation and acupuncture – but have gone on to say that acupuncture is safe and would do no harm.
Acupuncture treatment length can depend on the issue at hand and consists of a number of visits with a licensed acupuncture provider, who will help you determine if acupuncture will help to you. Acupuncture can assist:
a. three to four months before insemination by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or donor-egg transfer, is a time to start acupuncture to get the optimum time for its therapeutic effects; and
b. acupuncture treatments are timed according to the phases of your cycle. The chance for a successful treatment increases if you can predict your ovulation or the start of your luteal phase. It takes approximately 120 days for an egg to mature before the ovary releases it during a cycle. This means that it may take up to six months of regular acupuncture treatments before your fertility improves.
c. the first twelve weeks period to help prevent miscarriage;
Acupuncture and infertility treatments do complement each other. Acupuncture helps to provide patients with the best level of comfort and relief, and can possibly reduce the impact of the most challenging aspects of IVF and other infertility treatments.

Medifast Liquid Diet: Is It a Safe Treatment for Obesity?
Medifast weight loss Liquid Diet: Is It a Safe Treatment for Obesity?
Recently there’s been renewed interest in the use of very low calorie, liquid diets to treat obesity when other more conservative diet plans have failed to work. One of the most popular liquid protein diets available to the public is the Medifast Liquid diet. This very low calorie diet typically provides the patient with 400 to 800 calories a day in the form of high protein liquid shakes. The very low calorie portion of the program is maintained for a period of three months at which time sensible, well balanced meals are gradually added back into the patient’s diet to give them a reduced calorie diet of around 1000-1200 calories per day. During this period, the patient learns how to eat a well balanced diet in preparation for maintaining their initial weight loss.
But, is the Medifast Liquid Diet safe? Interestingly enough, very low calorie liquid protein diets earned a bad reputation in the 1970’s when sixty deaths were attributed to the use of these diets to treat obesity. A subsequent investigation showed the liquid protein diets on the market at the time were composed of a substandard protein which likely played a role in the patient’s deaths. The modern very low calorie liquid protein diets, such as Medifast, derive their protein sources from milk and egg whites, both of which supply high quality protein components.
It’s important to note diets such as the Medifast Liquid Diet are not suitable for patients who have only a few pounds to lose, due to their very low calorie composition. The ideal candidate would be someone who is morbidly obese and who has failed more conservative diet plans. Other good candidates would be patients who are moderately obese with underlying medical conditions that necessitate rapid weight loss to avoid worsening of their underlying health problems.
The Medifast Liquid Diet plan should never be initiated without a complete medical consultation to rule out medical conditions that might preclude participation including a history of stroke or heart attack, depression, or pregnancy. The diet should only be followed while under the close supervision of a medical doctor.
What are the potential side effects of the Medifast Liquid Diet plan? Participants may experience occasional dizziness and lightheadedness, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, and hair loss. There’s also an increased risk of gall bladder disease due to the rapid weight loss.
How about maintenance of weight loss after completion of the Medifast Liquid Diet plan? One disadvantage to the program is it does cause the metabolism to slow, meaning the patient will quickly regain the lost weight if she returns to her previous eating habits. Thus, it will be important to promote healthier eating habits and stress the importance of exercise for long term weight control.
If used under close supervision by a medical professional, patients who are morbidly obese may benefit from using the Medifast Liquid Diet to achieve weight loss they might not otherwise be able to achieve which can have long term positive effects on their health and well being.

Infertility Treatment Options
When seeking to enlist the help of reproductive medicine and treatment in seeking treatment for infertility, couples may begin to feel overwhelmed. Not understanding most of what science and medicine throws at them, couples will begin to feel overwhelmed by their new journey. Speaking with and consulting with a physician before making a lofty decision such as which treatment to choose is a very wise choice for couples to make.
Infertility treatment exists thanks to innovations and advancements in the reproductive sciences field. Researchers in the field have developed new and efficient ways of helping people overcome their infertility problems. When deciding to take advantage of these advancements, couples should be sure to speak with a physician. Consultation with your doctor will tell you many things such as if you are a good candidate for certain treatments, what to expect before, during and after treatment, as well as realistic expectations each couple should have for the infertility treatment they choose or are given. It is important to realize that not every option may fit the couple’s needs or be realistic solution to their problems. Some treatments are designed to treat a certain cause of infertility and may not be effective against other causes of the problem. Infertility can be a tricky matter and discussing the topic with a physician will help the couple get their questions answered and all of their concerns addressed. In the end, it may be that undergoing treatment is not the best option for the couple, but it is better to learn this before, rather than after, the treatment.
Some of the options couples have when enlisting in an infertility treatment program include in vitro fertilization, Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, intrauterine insemination and various hormonal treatments. In vitro fertilization is when the physicians mix the sperm and eggs together in a lab, so that the sperm will fertilize the egg. A fertilized egg is then placed in the woman’s uterus so that they can develop into a baby. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection involves injecting the male’s sperm directly into the female’s egg so that fertilization can occur. Intrauterine insemination is when sperm is inserted directly into the uterus so that the sperm may fertilize the woman’s eggs. These are just preliminary explanations of these infertility treatment options. More information is, of course, available through your doctor. In fact, always collect as much information as possible when deciding to undergo treatment for infertility problems. This allows the couple to make as educated a decision as possible.
Another option couples have, depending on their specific infertility problem, is surrogacy. This is where another woman carries a baby for the couple. There are two options here. In option one, traditional surrogacy, the surrogate’s egg is fertilized with the man’s sperm through artificial insemination. In option two, gestational surrogacy, your egg is fertilized by the man’s sperm and then transferred into the surrogate’s uterus for the remainder of the pregnancy. These being just two more options couples have, there are many more infertility treatment options available for couples to consider. Speaking with a doctor about all your options is the smartest thing to do, as they can give all of the possible options and explain them in great detail.

Herbal Treatment for Women’s Problems
The female reproductive system consists of the external and internal genital organs. Breast disorders may be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). Most are noncancerous and not life threatening. Often, they do not require treatment. In contrast, breast cancer can mean loss of a breast or of life.
Thus, for many women, breast cancer is their worst fear. However, potential problems can be detected early when women regularly examine their breasts themselves and have mammograms.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include breast pain, lumps, and a discharge from the nipple. Breast symptoms do not necessarily mean that a woman has breast cancer or another serious disorder. However, if a woman has any of the following symptoms, she should see her doctor:
A lump that feels distinctly different from other breast tissue or that does not go away
swelling that does not go away
puckering or dimpling in the skin of the breast
scaly skin around the nipple
changes in the shape of the breast
changes in the nipple, such as turning inward
Discharge from the nipple, especially if it is bloody.
Herbal Treatment
Apply a warm compress for 15-20 minutes on your breast, by using a heated towel or a heating pad to get relief from breast tenderness. This problem occurs mainly before, after or during your monthly period. For such times you can use a cold compress with the help of ice packs or frozen packets of fruits and vegetables wrapped in towel.
Sometimes not wearing bar can be a good enough reason for breast pain. Wear bras that support your breasts. See to it that the bras are well-padded if you are wearing an under-wired bra. If nothing works try a sports bra.
Soya products contain isoflavones which lessen breast tenderness. Include soy food such as soybeans, soy milk, soy burgers and other soy products in your diet. Cutting down on your salt intake will help reduce water retention which in turn relieves pain. Avoid caffeine in any form as it contains methylxanthine that stimulates breast tissue and causes pain.
Food: sensitivity or allergy can disrupt hormone balance, and it may be that either eliminating certain culprit foods, or increasing your nutrition to make up for deficiencies causing allergies, or both, will help the body to regain its balance.
Aromatic seeds, such as anise, cumin, fennel, caraway, coriander, and dill increase milk production and tone the digestive system. Their powers are carried through the breast milk, curtailing colic and indigestion. To brew, simply put a heaping spoonful of dried seeds in a cup and fill to the top with boiling water. Let steep for 5-10 minutes. Drink warm with honey. Up to two quarts a day can be consumed.
Avoid soap, cologne, deodorant and powder on your nipples or breasts. Do not wash nipples with soap. Soap predisposes the nipples to chapping and cracking.
Nourishing herbs, such as raspberry leaves, stinging nettle, oatstraw, and red clover blossoms – prepared as strong infusions*, not taken in pills, capsules, tinctures, or teas – not only encourage a plentiful supply of breast milk, they support the overall health of mother and child. The minerals in these herbs are amazingly abundant, so they counter mineral loss from nursing, and help keep mom calm and alert during those first few weeks of round-the-clock infant care.
